Champions League action

All four Spanish sides had mixed results this week and the shock without a doubt was Sevilla's failure to beat Romanian Champions Unirea Urziceni. The Andalusians knew anything from the tie in Romania would secure top spot but the win leaves Unirea within a point of the Last 16 themselves.

Barcelona:
Barcelona came out on top against Inter Milan. The 2-0 scoreline was enough to see Barcelona move top with just one game left in the group away to Dynamo Kiyv in two weeks time. Goals from Gerard Piqué and Pedro Rodríguez were enough for Barcelona.

Real Madrid:
Real Madrid took a top spot in their group ahead of aC Milan after a 1-0 win over Swiss champions FC Zurich. The Swiss came to Madrid with three points on their minds and only for a Gonzalo Higuaín strike they would've got one. Chances for Madrid were not taking and Marcelo hit the post but a deserved victory that also saw Cristiano Ronaldo return after a month and a half on the sidelines.

Atlético Madrid:
Atlético were pushed all the way by Cypriot champions APOEL Nicosia. The hosts took the lead through Nenad Mirosavljevic. Atlético though kept in the game and got their rewards when Simao slotted home. The results means the Europa League place is still not decided.

Sevilla:
Sevilla travelled to Romania looking for the result that would secure top spot and that didn't happen. The Romanians have shown this season they can cut it in Europe and took a massive scalp here. An Ivica Dragutinovic own goal was the difference on the night despite a 2nd half of Sevilla dominence. Although Sevilla are already through top spot hasn't been secured yet which will go to the Romanians should they win and Sevilla lose in two weeks time.

Back after the international break the league plays host to what could be a vital weekend with both Real Madrid and Barcelona in action.

Deportivo v Atlético Madrid: 18:00:
Atlético Madrid visit Galicia to play Deportivo in a game that is a must-win for the Madrid side. Currently in the relegation zone, Atlético need to pick up points if they are to challenge for European places for next season. Deportivo themselves are going strong in 5th but also need the points to move up into the top 4 for tonight at least.

Real Madrid v Racing Santander: 20:00:
Real Madrid have an oppertunity to go top of the league for a few hours before Barcelona play. Racing Santander are the visitors this week who are 17th in the league and struggling so far. Raúl Albiol, Van Nistelrooy, Lassana Diarra and Cristiano Ronaldo are all out for the hosts.

Athletic Bilbao v Barcelona: 22:00:
A vital game for the visitors as they will be aiming to hold onto their lead at the top with victory in Bilbao. The Basques will be no pushovers as the San Mamés is a tough place to get a result. The visitors are without Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Éric Abidal, Rafael Márquez and Yaya Touré tonight while the hosts are waiting on Fernando Llorente and Gaizka Toquero, who face fitness tests today.

Sevilla 3-2 Villarreal

An entertaining game in the Estádio Ramón Sánchez Pizjuan as Sevilla maintained 3rd place with a 3-2 win over Villarreal. Villarreal who had put five past Tenerife last week and another four past Lazio on Thursday looked like getting something from this game.
Luís Fabiano gave the hosts a 9th minute lead which was cancelled out by Robert Pirés, who also scored last week.
David Fuster gave the Yellow Submarine the lead on the hour-mark to silence the crowd. However the crowd were singing again as Luís Fabiano made the most of his chance a minute later.
Five minutes later Frédéric Kanouté put Sevilla back in front. One talking-point was Diego Perotti's corners during the 2nd half in which he was taking them a yard outside the quadrant.

Valencia 3-1 Real Zaragoza

Valencia remain 4th after beating Real Zaragoza in the evening kick-off before 3rd placed Sevilla played Villarreal.
Juan Mata opened the scoring for Los Che on 17 minutes before top scorer David Villa made it 2-0 on 40 minutes. A minute later Pablo Hérnandez, enjoying a great season so far made it 3-0.
Abel Aguilar pulled one back for the visitors on 65 minutes.

Almería 2-0 Osasuna

Almería are mid-table but did get their 3rd victory of the season thanks to an own goal from Josetxo and Kalu Uche's strike.
Josetxo put through his own net after just three minutes before Kalu Uche made sure of the win in added time.
Osasuna in 10th with 12 points.

Racing Santander 0-2 Athletic Bilbao

Athletic Bilbao are another side lying in the top half after another victory away to Racing. Having drew 1-1 on Thursday against Nacional, Athletic were looking to follow that with a victory.
The victory they got with Carlos Gurpegi giving them the lead on 31 minutes. 75 minutes in and Andoni Iraola converted a penalty for 2-0. Iraola, who made the Spain squad last month continues his fine season.
Racing in 17th while Athletic are up to 8th.

Sporting Gijón 1-0 Espanyol

Sporting Gijón's good start continues after they got another three points at home to Espanyol, who themselves are having a good start.
Croatian Maté Bilic scored the only goal after three minutes to secure their 4th win of the season.
Espanyol slip to 9th while Sporting are now 7th just outside the Europa league places.

Real Valladolid 0-0 Xerez

Xerez continue to pick up points here and there and held Real Valladolid to a 0-0 draw. Xerez, the favourites for the drop have been going better than expect and with this point are in 19th. Real Valladolid move into 14th.
David Prieto was sent-off in added time for Xerez who held on for the point.
